In England the estimated number of people suffering from chronic cases of Hepatitis C is around 500,000. This does not include the acute cases of Hepatitis C (i.e. those that have been present for less than six months) and every other strain of the disease. Although a lot is being done to try and halt the spread of the disease, the number of infections, chronic cases and death toll as a result of Hepatitis continues to rise.
For British, Scottish, Irish and Welsh Hepatitis patients there are pegylated interferon and ribavirin treatments available, which have a high cure rate of 60 to 80%. This does not however detract from the fact that Hepatitis continues to spread like wildfire amongst a diverse range of people in the UK, regardless of lifestyle, age and pre-existing health.
If you would like to help do something about the spread of Hepatitis then join the World Hepatitis Alliance’s campaign to raise awareness at www.aminumber12.org. Make sure you do so before World Hepatitis Awareness Day on May 19th.
